When completing scent consultations I am regularly asked this question, and honestly they both have there place but lets explore some differences below:
Essential Oils:
Source: Essential oils are natural aromatic extracts obtained from plants through processes like steam distillation or cold pressing. They carry the bioactive compounds of the plant.
Composition: Essential oils contain a complex mix of natural compounds, including terpenes, phenols, and oxides.
Therapeutic Properties: Essential oils offer therapeutic benefits due to their natural constituents. They can support physical and emotional well-being.
Cost: Essential oils tend to be more expensive because of their extraction process and purity.
Fragrance Oils:
Source: Fragrance oils are synthetic aromatic liquids created in laboratories. They mimic the scents of natural substances (fruits, flowers, spices) but are entirely man-made.
Composition: Fragrance oils contain artificial compounds designed to replicate specific scents. These compounds may include alcohols, esters, and other synthetic additives.
Therapeutic Properties: Fragrance oils have no inherent therapeutic properties. They are purely for fragrance purposes.
Cost: Fragrance can be cost-effective due to their synthetic nature.
Which Is Better?
It depends on your purpose:
Aromatherapy and Wellness: If you seek health benefits, choose essential oils. They offer natural healing properties.
Pure Fragrance: If you’re solely interested in scenting products (candles, soaps, cosmetics), fragrance oils are suitable and can be more affordable.
Remember, both have their place—essential oils for holistic well-being and fragrance oils for delightful scents!
